A Community Project
In 2024 Breckland District Council were successful in applying for and obtaining a grant from the Kings Coronation Living Heritage Fund to provide finance for local Community Groups to plant Community Orchards.
The Brettenham and Kilverstone Parish Council received approval and funding from Breckland DC to plant such a community orchard of 40 apple and pear trees within the Public Open Space in Arlington Way. IP24 2DZ. The trees are native cultivars from Norfolk and will help to maintain the long heritage of fruit growing in the county. Additionally the orchard will increase local biodiversity and provide an education opportunity for children and families.
During 2025 a local community group was formed from volunteers and the purchase of the trees from a approved ‘Healthy Plant’ supplier was achieved early in 2025.
A successful couple of days activity in January by more than 20 local volunteers saw the orchard planted. A resident adjacent to the Public Open Space has agreed to provide an all important source of water to ensure the trees are watered during the initial two years of establishment.
A volunteers group has been set up to support the orchard going forward. If you want to be involved in this community project or need further information on how you can help please contact nick.d.brittain@gmail.com
